1、General preventive measures

Cylindrical and laminar lithium batteries have one thing in common with all other types of batteries: if they are electrically or mechanically damaged, there is a potential danger. However, they are still safe if they can be properly handled before the initial purchase until the last drop, and they are used correctly in the designated device. The potential hazards of lithium batteries are mostly related to high temperatures, as high temperatures can cause the lithium metal to melt and create high pressure inside the battery, which can also cause the seal interface to break. Therefore, during the handling of lithium batteries, the following precautions must be observed:

• Do not short-circuit the battery。

• Do not charge the battery (recharge)。

• Do not over discharge。

• Do not burn。

• Do not raise the battery temperature outside the allowable range and do not use it beyond the allowable temperature range。

• Do not squeeze the battery, do not poke the battery。

• Do not put the internal substances of the battery in water。

• Do not disassemble or open the battery。

• Do not reverse the positive and negative electrodes of the battery。 

2、Assembly of multi-cell battery packs

• Information for end users 

Many devices require higher voltage, current, or capacity, and batteries generally cannot meet these requirements. The multi-cell battery pack is a suitable solution for connecting a group of batteries in a mixed-type (ie, both series and parallel) connection, and then assembling suitable protective equipment.。


• Please order the design and pre-product of the multi-cell battery pack directly from the company or some authorized battery assembler。

• If you are only an end user, have not received the necessary training and do not have a certain experience, do not disassemble the battery pack.。

• Battery Packer Information

Assemblers who can assemble batteries should comply with the following regulations and recommendations:

Select the appropriate size battery unit。

• Do not assemble different types or sizes of battery cells together。

• Do not pack new and old batteries together。

• Do not assemble batteries from different manufacturers。

• Do not assemble batteries made with different technologies。

Open the package that will be used to make the cells of the multi-cell battery pack. Proper battery cell detection, including measurement of open circuit voltage OCV 。

• Only use battery cells marked with a clear designation and with the specified model number。

• Only use cells without electrolyte leakage or other mechanical damage。

In particular, it should be noted that when assembling a multi-cell battery pack, a good method of operation must be used.。

• Ensure that the cells in the battery pack are insulated from each other。

• Lay the wires, connections and contacts of the circuit and ensure that they are insulated from each other and prevent short circuits.。

• Only the terminals of the battery cells can be connected by welding or spot welding.。

• Welding time should be as short as possible and should not exceed 10 seconds。

• All battery cells, especially the C, D, and DD cells, should be assembled so that all battery cells are straight up, must not be upward, and some must be downward. Do not reverse the orientation. Allows all batteries to be assembled side by side。


• Do not attempt to solder or spot weld the battery case directly without the necessary tools and skills, as this may result in excessive temperature and danger。

• Use battery connectors that have been polarized (already passed electricity), or at least ensure that the polarity of the battery is correctly identified and protect the terminals of the battery wires。

• Mark the battery pack correctly (including model/rated voltage/date code) and attach the appropriate safety label。

Other preventive measures:

• Do not wear conductive jewels when assembling the battery pack or connecting the battery to the device, but be sure to wear safety glasses。

• Operators should wear safety masks during spot welding or welding operations。

• Only use well-insulated tools。

• Packaging, insulation, similar battery pack materials must meet the minimum required level in order to limit the formation of high temperatures in the battery pack。

• Do not use flammable materials。

• Through shock and vibration tests, it is tested whether the battery pack has reached the specified shipping and handling requirements。 

3、Protective component

The lithium battery can be used as the main power supply component of the device, and it can also be used as a backup power source, that is, it starts to work when the power supply fails. Protective components are often used in battery circuits. The degree of protection depends on the device, or depends on the requirements of those regulatory agencies, such as U.S. UL and Canadian CSA authorities. The component is protected to protect one or more of the following:

• When the loaded voltage is higher than the voltage of the battery ("charged"), the current exceeding the battery capacity is prevented from loading on the battery.。

This device may be an isolating diode that is mounted in the battery pack and is connected in series with the battery in the direction of discharge of the battery. This connection can more sensitively block the current flowing back into the battery. Isolation diodes are made of silicon, Schottky, or Tantalum and can be used as long as the leakage current is below 10 μA at maximum operating temperature and maximum reverse voltage. (UL certification requires that two diodes, or one diode and one resistor, be included in the circuit. When one of the diodes fails, the other diode or resistor can still effectively protect the circuit). Similarly, if the battery consists of two or more rows of cells, an isolation diode must be connected to each series in the circuit. This isolation diode prevents one serial from charging other serials when there is an imbalance between the different serials。

• The current is higher than the allowable value of the discharge current ("short circuit")

All the cylindrical or platy lithium batteries in the short circuit, the circuit will be disconnected, so the discharge current will not rise to exceed a safe value. In general, this inherent self-protection property is sufficient for itself and does not require the addition of other protective devices, such as current limiting resistors. However, if the operating temperature rises, that is to say above 75 0 C, a short circuit may occur, it is recommended that additional protective devices be used at this time.。

• The current applied by the reverse ("over-discharge") of the battery cell

This device can be a diode, connected in parallel with each cell in the battery pack. When the battery generates a reverse voltage, the diode starts to conduct electricity and effectively conducts the resulting current instead of passing the current through the battery cell.。

In addition to one or two of the above listed protection measures, it is recommended to connect a slow blow fuse to the outside of the battery pack at some time.。
